Technology in English Classroom
Technology has become an essential part of our life. Use of technology in teaching English is not a new thing. Almost every English teacher is trying to use technology in his/her teaching. Even our learners are widely using the technology not probably in learning but in their day to day life.
But the scenario is not same everywhere. Even in same school we can observe different classes where learners belong to different social backgrounds.Some of them are well acquainted with technology. They can easily handle smartphones, computers or laptops whereas there are some learners who are unfamiliar with all these.
The class where the project was conducted, includes the learners of second category. Many of them are unaware of using technology and different applications like Powerpoint, Excel etc. They haven't learn subjects like ICT or Computers till 9th standard. Some of them even didn't know different uses of Computers and smartphones.
We know that this year ICT is not included in the curriculum of 9th standard. It is expected that ICT should be integrated in every subject. Like other teachers I was also using PPTs, videos and making the teaching learning of English in my 9th standard class enjoyable. But I wanted to make my learners to use technology of their own. After a brainstorm with my learners, an idea of using Powerpoint presentation for doing English Projects and Oral presentation was finalized. In the beginning I gave the demonstration of making slides for Power Point presentation using laptop and encouraged them to try it at home. But only two to three students have computers at their home. Then I asked them to use the smartphones with their parents' permission and try to make slides. As it was a project and they were getting marks for it, I gave them option to do it manually but also mentioned that those who will submit it in PPT form will get extra points. I was not sure for their response but surprisingly many of them tried it and made PPTs on Appreciation of poems, PPTs on Scientists. Most remarkable thing is that they submitted their PPTs by emails. Moreover, they are now giving their orals with the help of their PPTs. Other learners who haven't yet tried and submitted their projects are now motivated by these learners and now trying to make their PPTs.
